Girl Scout Troop 10207

Girl Scouts Troop 10207 serves McKinley Elementary, Elmonica Elementary and the surrounding areas.  Troop 10207 is inclusive and all girls grades K-5th are invited to participate.

This inclusive, multi-grade structure allows younger girls to learn by example and older girls to learn independence and responsibility.

Girl Scout Daisy: Grades K-1 – Girls learn they can care for animals and themselves
Girl Scout Brownie: Grades 2-3 – Girls explore their place in the wide world of girls
Girl Scout Junior: Grades 4-5 – Girls explore all the roles open to them in life

What is a Girl Scout?

·         A girl DISCOVERS her special skills and talents, finds the confidence to set challenging goals for herself and strives to live by her values.  This includes being proud of where she came from as well as where she’s going.

·         A girl CONNECTS with others, which means she learns how to team up, solve conflicts, and have healthy relationships. These skills help her in school right now and prepare her for any career she chooses in the future.

·         A girl TAKES ACTION and makes the world a better place, learning a lot about her community and the world along the way.

What Girl Scouting Does for Girls

·         When girls lead in their own lives, they DISCOVER their values and the confidence to do what’s right.
·         When girls lead in their communities, they CONNECT as they learn how to work with other people.  This helps them get along better with others, resolve conflicts, and do better on group projects at school.
·         When girl scouts lead in the world, they TAKE ACTION to change the world for the better.

Girl Scout Troops
·         Troops are girl-led, allowing the girls ample opportunity to participate and lead in the planning as appropriate for their ages.
o   Girls explore the activities that interest them the most
o   Girls have the opportunity to learn cooperatively
o   Girls learn by doing

Gear
While many Girl Scout products are available, the only required purchases are the vest or sash (required to place badges) and the Brownie book “A World of Girls”.  These can be purchased online through the Girl Scout website under “Shop” or at the local Girl Scout Store (address below).  Please note that girls that were in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades during the 2014-2015 school year will be ‘bridging’ up to the next level in the Fall.  This may influence your decision on whether to purchase the full uniform at this time since they will wear a different uniform next Fall.

Our Journey
This Summer, our troop will be working out of the Brownie Journey Book “A World of Girls”.  While this journey is designed for Brownies, we will be utilizing it for all grade levels during this introductory period.

“A World of Girls”
·         Girls will learn to use clues in stories to make the world better
·         Girls will get creative—through a medium of their choice—and tell their story of what they accomplished
·         Girls will find clues to better the world and share stories of their success—that builds confidence!

Summer Troop Meeting Plan
We will hold twice-monthly Troop Meetings and once-a-month Adventures (field trips).  See the calendar for additional information.  Additional camps and overnight field trips can be scheduled based on troop interest.

Badges
Girls will earn badges for completed activities and adventures.  Two examples which will be earned by girls include our Troop Crest and the “Friend” badge which will be earned by becoming friends with our Troop members.  Additional badges will be earned throughout the Summer.

Even more badges can be earned by completing the work in the level-based Journey books at home.  For example, in the Brownie Journey book for grades 2 and 3 “A World of Girls”, Girl Scouts can earn three badges for three different lessons – “Hear a Story”, “Change a Story” and “Tell a Story”.   Girl Scouts in the other grade levels (Daisies and Juniors) can earn badges by purchasing and working through their choice of Journey books on  their own.

Parental Participation
While not requires, parent participation is GREATLY appreciated!  Volunteer opportunities can be found on the Parent Information Form and we encourage you to sign up.  We know that your time is valuable, and we will ensure that it is used wisely.

Positions that require you to be with the girls without a Troop Leader present, do require you to register as a Girl Scout Volunteer.

Finances
Girl Scouts is a non-profit organization and each troop is financially independent.  All supplies, activities and badges have to be paid for by the troop.  We estimate that each troop meeting costs $5 per girl (excluding monthly Adventures).  We ask that all parents contribute as they are able.  An envelope will be available at each troop meeting to leave contributions in cash or check.
